Eight years after the 9/11 attacks, Samia-Al-Sayyid an Iraqi immigrant is living a quiet life in New York City after she fled her home to avoid imminent death.

She works hard for her cold, heartless, high-strung boss, loves her seventeen-years-old-son, and cherishes the close friendship she has formed with her best friend Susan.

Nothing can go wrong, or so she thinks – until the estranged brother she left back in Iraqi shows up on her door step. Then she finds herself in a cab, on her way to the hospital to identify her son, a terror suspect who has blown the city, and with it her boss’ husband, and her best friend’s son. With everything lost, she is forced to flee to Iraq where she confronts her past. Will she make peace with her past? Can she get forgiveness for all the damage she has caused?

Full Circle is a contemporary fiction tale of friendship, family, and hope. It explores the devastation of loss, the great capacity to forgive and the lengths our loved ones will go to protect us.

Interview With Regina Timothy

Hi Regina, your book, Full Circle, was released last year. How would you introduce your book in a few sentences?
Full Circle follows the life of Samia-al-Sayyid an Iraqi immigrant living in the U.S with her son and the relationships she creates with two women - her employer and her best friend.

Samia-al-Sayyid is a thirty-three year old Iraqi immigrant living in the U.S with her son seventeen-year old son Aazim she got as a result of rape in her teens.

Samia works as Melisa’s housekeeper, a successful fashion designer whose character is aptly described by three words - cold, heartless, and high-strung. On the surface, she seems to have it all, but deep inside she is struggling with a failing marriage, and a brother who is stuck fighting in Afghanistan.

Susan is a single mom of two who works as Melisa’s assistant. She has a unique perspective on what Melisa is going though since her husband who served in Iraq committed suicide as a result of PTSD

How long did it take for you to write the book?
I think I took five years writing, re-writing and editing the book. It wasn’t one continual process. I would write for a few weeks put it on hold for months in favor of other projects, come back to it and put it on hold yet again.

Even when I was done writing, it took a while before I decided to release it. But when I decided it was time to release the book there was no looking back.

How did you come up with names for your characters?
Most times when writing a story I’m lucky and the names pop in my head when I try them out they fit perfectly. I was lucky with most names in the story, but I struggled with the names of Samia, her son Aazim and her brother Aadham. Their names changed a couple of times throughout the writing process. I used Goggle to come up with a list of appropriate Middle Eastern names that reflected their characters. I then tried out the names aloud and settled on the names in the story.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?
Writing energizes me. It’s such a wonderful feeling to see your characters and settings come to life and coherently communicate the message you intended your story to communicate. It motivates you to come up with even more work. You end up spending longer than you intended buried in your work.

What is your motivation for writing?
I love books and movies with a strong female lead who are able to inspire and explore human associations. I wanted to be one of the million voices in the world that gives a voice to these remarkable characters.

Writing a story that readers can connect with on an emotional level and stay with them long after the last page is something I endeavor to do and I think Full Circle has been able to do that.

What do you do in your free time?
I consider myself a movie buff and I spend a lot of my free time watching movies and TV shows. I also enjoy reading a good book irrespective of genre and lots of sleep.

Thank you very much for having me. I’ve had a lot of fun.
